There are about 45 species of snakes (only 6 of which are toxic), which are located along the Atlantic and Gulf coastal states from Louisiana to North Carolina. These snakes live in a variety of mountain habitats and wetlands play an important role in the ecology of the region. They are both predators and prey, and thus form important links in natural food webs.Unfortunately, the stocks of many species of snakes, not only in the U.S. south-east but all over the world is diminished. These decreases are mainly due to habitat loss and degradation, pollution and high mortality on roads in agriculture development and other human activities combined. In addition, the introduction of invasive species exercise, diseases, pests and climate change can also have negative effects on populations snake. Many species of snakes have to resist pressurecaused by unsustainable harvesting for the pet trade, and the persecution of persons because of misinformation or lack of knowledge about snakes.
